We are developing a computational framework based on covariant partial differential equations and random tensor fields to encode patterns of anatomical variability in human populations. While we have applied these approaches extensively to brain data from large human populations, similar approaches may be applicable to encoding 3D facial variation for human face recognition, as in the work of Dr. Anuj Srivastava and Curt Hesher at Florida State University, who provided the above mesh image (of Paul Thompson).
